Float Installation

Locations: Carson Beach, Boston and East End Beach, ME

What if the core of our desires is ancient? Who dreamt you here? How may we give gratitude and collaborate with their visions?

This work came from a desire by the artist to collaborate with the ocean and create a floating installation. After creating the first iteration, crystal learned about the Ghost Festival in Taiwan which floats water lanterns as a practice to honor ancestors during ghost month. In this way, Float felt part of an ancient messaging from her own ancestors from Taiwan.
This work has floated on the ocean as part of a ritual and event to honor and give gratitude to activists of the 1975 protests at Carson Beach - past and living Boston ancestors - that fought to free the beach for all to equitably relax, play, and just be.

Float 2 @ Carson Beach

This installation was part of a ritual of gratitude, honoring the ancestors who have cared and dreamed us here. crystal designed the installation and originally tried to make it out of Phragmites reeds (which she has worked with before for another installation).

She later found bamboo to be more sturdy and found a source to harvast bamboo. The top of the installation is in the design of the ‘endless knot’ a symbol in Buddhism for interconnection.
